Why I'm quitting Facebook:
I have been researching social networks, machine intelligence, and strategic movement communications since 2010. Facebook siphons energy, money, and attention away from everyone's life force and healthy relationships. The business and ownership model is not healthy for what is happening on Earth right now, and I am increasingly upset every day I am still on that platform at how much I see it, and nearly all the media and news companies that participate with it, gluing people to the screen, frozen in fear at climate change, staring at our screens and angrily typing about the migration crisis, and continuing to vanity post in an attempt to make ourselves feel better or “do something.”
We are operating a functional alternative through Bloom Network. It's not a “social network” in the sense Facebook is, it's interconnected communities of people working together in their local bioregions and together as an international solidarity network, to share economic and mobilization relationships in decentralized, mutually respectful and supportive ways. We are in the process of setting up a DAO or “smart organization” so formalize the business relationships and co-ownership model, and what “marketing” looks like in this context. But it is all functioning now and you can participate, though online webinars, in person events, and a skill-sharing networking tool called The Global Change Collective where people from different climate change initiatives and related issues are collaborating across government institutions, industries, and regenerative cultures worldwide. Go to http://bloomnetwork.org/become-a-member or http://bloomnetwork.org/about to learn more. Our monthly community video call is every third Monday.
Get off Facebook, get involved with Bloom Network, or other local food movement and community resilience work in the communities where you live, or corporate volunteering in areas of action you are passionate about. Every time you feel yourself start scrolling on that screen, stop. That is the single easiest action you can do right now to do something about Climate Change. I can't tell you enough how much social networking technologies and strategic political forces have gamified our human biology right now. It is very solidly in singularity territory. The healthy pathways through this time are to build decentralized systems, both locally and in the structure of the internet and money. (Not Facebook's Libra, it is not a truly decentralized currency in terms of power and purpose.)
I am now committing to leaving Facebook. Please see the above links for how to keep in touch. If you'd like me to have your email address you can share it with me via this encrypted form: https://forms.id/f/magentaceiba.id.blockstack/cc89c68707
Lastly, Facebook's interface blows so hard. (Quitting is going to free up a huge ball of energy I waste in frustration every time I open that url.) If we can get Bloom Network off the ground I will have my way with having a more beautiful, spacious, quiet and functional interface for connecting with people and constructively working through difficult issues together. :D You are welcome to help make that happen with me and explore what's happening through the web 3.0 movement.
